Rúnar Magnússon

Icelandic sound artist Rúnar Magnússon has been creating adventurous and imaged music
for 15 years. Magnússon’s roots lie deeply imbedded in field recordings, nature sounds,
sound collages, and secret recordings of the people and places around him. Magnússon’s
work has been described with terms such as electro-acoustic, experimental, and sound art but it still manages to remain eclectic and versatile. In 1994, Magnússon and fellow icelander Petur Eyvindsson formed the duo Vindva Mei. Vindva Mei has been referred to, by the Icelandic media, as both the ’secret duo’ and ‘the schizophrenic duo’ due to their rare performances and inherent creative polarity. Magnússon is conceptual and abstract while Eyvindsson tends to be more rhythmic and accessible. Vindva Mei has released three CDs, but their collaboration has become more static since Magnússon moved to Denmark in 1996, where he currently is completing a masters degree in Electronic Music at The Danish Institute for Electronic Music at The Royal Conservatory in Aarhus. In the meantime, Magnússon has released three solo albums, one online release on the Noisejihad label, a piece of generative music with Icelandic artist Thor Magnússon entitled SameSameButDifferent, contributed a track on the compilation Tchaikovsky Electro (Kama Records), and continues to write music for theatre plays and dance performances. Magnússon recently started to work with surround sound and has played several concerts using multiple speakers in churches, theaters and museums.
Magnússon’s music is a pantheon to conceptual electronica; he writes tender ballads
decorated in natural imagery; landscape art still purposeful and direct. Magnússon’s music builds monuments then destroys them with bravery, cognition and a level of control rarely found.
Magnusson’s latest project is the duo Alien UFO with fellow Icelander Helgi Thorsson of
Stilluppsteypa and Evil Madness. Their debut will soon be released as a 3″ cd on Lona
Records in Hong Kong.

since June of 2005, Waterland Kwanyin is the first open plate for experimental, improvised musicians and sound artists who live or transiently in Beijing. as the idea from KwanYin Records, it offers opportunities for artists from different background who now (or in the future) be into free music, e.g. abstract and spiritual sound, field recording mix, noise, electroacoustic, sonic explore, as well visual art, body performance, etc.
