“Flowers cover the grasslands that have seen the gods die
The wind in the far faraway is further off than afar
There are no more tears to be wept by my lute
I return this far-off faraway to the grasslands.”

from Haizi’s

This will be Three Shadow’s last outdoor event of 2007.

In the years between 2001 and 2007, freelance photographer Als travelled through China’s borderlands, including Xinjiang, Yunnan and his native Inner Mongolia, taking more than 30,000 pictures. This event will present a selection of 300 of those works in their first public exhibition.
Als’ pictures are free and simple. They show horses, figures seen from behind or in profile; sometimes indistinct, sometimes in silent motion. He shows us people and things from unconventional angles, images that become metaphors for waiting, calling out, refusal or contemplation.
Distant horizons or backgrounds seen from afar; figures on the road, in motion, leaping. Everything is hazy, uncertain. Galloping horses, birds in flight, drifting clouds, silent figures; these could be passages read in an existentialist novel. A figure flashes past in the rear-view mirror of a motorcycle; one thinks of a Magritte painting, absurd and lonesome.
Als is not the product of some art school, he is more the wandering folk artist. He has a lust for life and engages with it critically with through his lens, capturing from his own unique perspective spaces often overlooked. Many of his works contemplate the relationship between man and horse, others that between people and walls. There are scenes of religious ceremony. He shows us freedom and constraint, distance and intimacy, acceptance and resistance.
To accompany Als’ pictures, we have invited his good friends the band Hanggai, also from Inner Mongolia, and Kazakh musician Mu’er to perform at this event. Images and music will combine to bring us a thrilling night of tranquillity amidst passion.
