Start Making Sense!
Graffiti

In 2005, the first graffiti book written in Chinese was published in Taiwan, a year late it launched in China. In the book, contemporary street art scene in London, Berlin and other Europe cities documented by Fang Er and Meng Jin through out their three-year research. A year on after the book released, Fang Er and her FakeDesign team is organising an exhibition, entitled ‘Start Making Sense’, which takes place at the expectant FakeSpace in Beijing.

During the exhibition, French graffiti artist, Blek Le Rat, his beautiful real size human figure graffiti will be on display. He is widely recognized as a prestigious pioneer of stencil graffiti and his career spans two graffiti generations. Another highlight is the work from Banksy, a mystical name that claimed the most well known graffiti artist in the world. Despite of Banksy has never made his public appearance since he involved in urban art, his distinctive black and white stencil images have won huge reputation for him across fine art world to music industry. The exhibition is pleased to represent most of his classic stencil work, including few rare signed limited edition screen prints.

London sticker king, D-face also contributes his famous d-dog series on the show. And Arofish, an anarchist graffiti artist will put on his large size work, while Pure Evil has designed a specific installation for this exhibition to express his fantasy of Vampire culture.
Apparently, some of artists in the show are not direct graffiti people, but their unique body of work represents the clear influence of street art. Such as Jamie Hewlett, who designed the characters for Gorillaz, and Radio Head’s cover artist Stanley Donwood also delivers the message of street culture through his beautiful screen prints. As for the work from Insect and Sick Boy, in which strange atmosphere is created by using street graphics. Other artists like 3D, and Eine, whose work in the show have mixed graffiti tradition and conceptual art. New York based graffiti group Faile also presents their screen prints on the show, and come up together with the work from their well-known fellow Bast. Additionally, a French video artist Beaucourt Christophe will screen his documentary of street culture in the show.

Like what the exhibition curator Fang Er and Meng Jin described: after so many years interacting with modern culture, graffiti has been deeply integrated with urban life and starting making sense. The backgrounds of the artists featuring in this exhibition are diverse, but they all take their own roots to get engaged with graffiti in different manners.

FakeSpace is a place combines conceptual store and art space, which focuses on the relationship between art and everyday life. The space is founded by FakeDesign Studio. In 2000, FakeDesign Studio was set up by Fang Er in London, and Meng Jin joined in 2004 as an artist. It promotes creative activities between art and design. FakeDesign now resettled in Beijing.
