Justice Yeldham

Maverick musician of sorts Lucas Abela began his irreverent music career after Oren Ambarchi and Robbie Avenaim stubbled upon one of his radio performances back in 1994 and asked him to perform at their NOISE FEST and what is music? festivals.

Initially he could have been classed as an experimental turntablist although his work rarely resembled anything in the field. His early feats conducted under various monikers like a kombi, dj smallcock & peeled hearts paste, saw him stabb vinyl with Kruger style stylus gloves, bound on electro acoustic trampolines, perform deaf defying duet duels in crowded rooms with amplified samurai swords, hospitalised by his high powered turntables constructed from sewing machine motors, record chance john peel sessions with the flaming lips, being Otomo Yoshihide°?s favourite entry into the ground zero remix competition; consummation even though he didn°?t sample the CD but instead destroyed the disc using amplified skewers, drive along with pope john paul the II over the Sydney harbour bridge in his noise making van.

Currently he°?s been performing under the moniker Justice Yeldham & the Dynamic Ribbon Device which without blinking is a show unlike any other ever devised. The premise is simple, he amplifies broken sheets of glass and plays them with his face. Instead of expanding on that, I’ll let the following live reviews speak for themselves.

“Yeldham’s live performance consists of grinding his face into a sheet of mic’d up plate glass. It is hideous for a variety of reasons. One is that the transparency of the glass means you get to view his face all squished up against the other side of the glass like a kid on a special bus wiping his nose down the window as you overtake them on the motorway. Another reason is the sound really is quite nasty. The resonant properties of the glass means as he yells onto/into it and then pulls and squeezes at the sheet, the pitch of his voice wildly varies and wavers and this in turn is run through some truly ugly processing that makes it sound like a Dalek in it’s death throes.”

Performing this work to fresh audiences has been a primary concern for Lucas as his favourite audience is uninitiated and unexpecting. In order to access fresh souls outside the limited performance opportunities in his native Australia he has toured extensively around the world visiting over 30 countries in Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. During this time he has made appearances at many new music festivals most notably Turnament festival (Los Angeles 2003), Ideal Festival (Gothenburg ?C 2004), Transmediale Festival (Berlin ?C 2004), LEM festival (Barcelona ?C2004), Liverpool Biennial (Liverpool ?C 2004), No fun Festival (New York City ?C 2005), Unsound Festival (Krakow ?C 2005), LUFF (Lausanne ?C 2005), electrograph festival (Athens ?C 2006).

Justice Yeldham

Justice Yeldham是澳大利亚噪音艺术家Lucas Abela的众多化名之一，专为玻璃噪音项目而使用。这个名字意味着世界上最极端、勇敢、简洁和震撼的噪音现场表演。
Lucas Abela从1994年开始活动，最初是以实验唱盘艺人的身份，后来在给大友良英重新混音的作品征集中脱颖而出（他只是把原作CD放在汽车发动机上然后开车进行破坏）。他使用带唱针的手套，用连接声音放大装置的武士刀决斗，利用缝纫机和厨房工具，在公用电话亭狂喊以参加异地的“现场”表演……
他的玻璃项目非常简单：用接触式话筒、单块效果器、锋利的玻璃表演和他的脸。他总是因此受伤流血，而演出时间也经常短到只有几分钟（往往取决于玻璃是否过早破碎）。
为全新的观众表演，是Lucas的首要意愿，因为他最喜欢的观众是未经开发的、没有经验的。为了接触到澳大利亚有限的表演机会以外的新鲜灵魂，他在全世界展开了巡演——欧洲、北美、亚洲和中东的30多个国家。他因此参加了许多新音乐节，例如：Turnament（洛杉矶，2003）、Ideal（哥腾堡，2004），Transmediale（柏林，2004）、LEM（巴塞罗那，2004）、Liverpool Biennial（利物浦，2004）、No fun（纽约，2005）、Unsound（克拉科夫，2005）、LUFF（洛桑，2005）、electrograph（雅典，2006）

Kwanyin is name of a popular buddha in China. kwan(guan1) means view, observe, watch, etc. yin(yin1) means music, sound, sonic existence, information, etc.

since June of 2005, Waterland Kwanyin is the first open plate for experimental, improvised musicians/artists who live or transiently in Beijing. as the idea from KwanYin Records, it offers opportunities for artists from different background who now (or in the future) be into free music, e.g. abstract and spiritual sound, field recording mix, noise, electroacoustic, as well visual art, body performance, etc.
